St Petersburg - 11th to 14th of November 2009

Arriving in St Petersburg at 7.30am, still very much in darkness, we navigated our way to our hostel which unfortunately wasn't quite ready to take us. So we had a quick shower, dumped our bags and went for a walk until our rooms were ready for us to catch up on some much needed sleep. It had been snowing overnight in St Petersburg, so everything was covered in a nice fresh layer of snow.
Looking over the water to the Peter and Paul fortress.
While the girls were keen for some sleep, I managed to sucessfully argue that there weren't enough daylight hours for midday snoozes, so I dragged them over to the Mikhailovsky Castle. Surrounded by a moat and snow-covered parks, it was quickly becoming apparent that St Petersburg was a far prettier place than Moscow.
Where's Angela...?
Quick stop-off at the Kazan Cathedral.
We made it back to the hostel at around 2pm, for a much needed sleep. But not before booking a tour and tasting at the Russian Vodka Museum. This is St Isaac's Cathedral on the way to the Museum.
Thursday was set aside for the Hermitage. Mainly set inside the Winter Palace, its the home to all kinds of art, but again it was the building itself that really captured our attention.
On emerging from the Hermitage we were hit by some serious snow. But we weren't going to let that stop us, so we continued ticking off our "to-do" list by jumping onboard a canal boat for a tour of St Petersburgs many waterways.
We woke up the following day and it was still snowing. Hard. So we put an extra layer of woolies on and out we went.
Our destination was the hexagonal Peter and Paul Fortress, dating from 1703, the oldest building in St Petersburg. Planned by Peter the Great as a defense against the Swedes, it never actually saw action and was mainly used as a political prison.
We spent our last afternoon in St Petersburg wandering the streets, getting wet from the snow, and taking photos of the awesome scenery.

Ange had been feeling rubbish all day, so on Friday night Nicola and I left her to have an early night while the two of us went out for a few Russian beers.
